A short review of Triangle & Rhino’s new cd-r The Anti Horse Cabal by the mysterious I.I. Hurlbutt:
The Anti Horse Cabal was recorded live on the long running WRCT staple “It’s A Live Show.” With an expanded lineup including frequent collaborator Luke Farkas (202 and sax) and PGH harsh noise enthusiast and NNNCO brains RJ Myato (noise, guitar, vocals), Triangle & Rhino rip through equal parts composed works and driving blasts of dense improvised muck. The quartet does little at times to allow you to decipher between the two. Case in point, “Pink Pig” gets a rough handling. It’s normal intricacies get slimed by static, sax punctuations, and an on the spot reworking. All thats left is POWER. The relentless pummeling lets up briefly for “You In The Green Coat”. A quieter moment in the set where RJ Myato is left time and space to relate some witnessed absurdity. Even this piece leaves little to be comfortable with. “Anti Horse Cabal” is a grimy noise rock achievement with Triangle & Rhino giving a knowing nod to its past (Boda P’nodo, PGH warlocks, MOTL) and embracing a more chaotic future. – I.
